There are certain elements in a room that can completely change the way a space feels, and draperies are one of them.
The draperies in our primary bedroom had been hanging for nearly 10 years. And if I’m being truthful, I never really loved them. They worked, so they stayed—but I always felt like something about the room wasn’t quite finished.
So when Two Pages, a custom drapery workroom, reached out to me about collaborating on new draperies for our primary bedroom, I was excited to finally make a change.
Choosing the Right Fabric
One of the things I enjoyed most about working with Two Pages was their selection of fabrics. They offer so many options, as well as drapery hardware, making it easy to create a look that feels personal to your home.
Our bedroom already has a lot of personality. I have a colorful vintage rug, along with warm woods, collected pieces, texture and color throughout the space. Because of that, I didn’t want the draperies competing for attention.
I chose a cream plaid.
The subtle pattern gives the room interest without overwhelming it, and the lighter color helps keep our bedroom feeling fresh, light and bright. I love the juxtaposition of a classic plaid against the more colorful and collected pieces in the room.
Getting the Scale Right
Scale is so important when choosing window treatments.
We have high ceilings in our bedroom, so I chose double-width panels. With a room this size, standard-width panels wouldn’t have had enough presence. The additional fabric creates the fullness I wanted and feels much more proportional to the height of the windows and ceilings.
It’s one of those details that may seem small when you’re ordering, but it makes a tremendous difference once the draperies are installed.
The Details That Impressed Me
When the draperies arrived, I was immediately impressed with how beautifully they were packaged.
Even better? They had absolutely no wrinkles.
The panels are lined with a substantial, heavy lining that gives them a beautiful weight and allows them to hang so nicely. I also chose a pinch-pleat style, and the pleating is beautifully done.
Those finishing details are what give custom-looking draperies their polished appearance.
What a Difference Draperies Make
Once they were hung, I couldn’t believe the transformation.
The furniture didn’t change.
The vintage rug didn’t change.
The architecture didn’t change.
But suddenly, the entire bedroom felt different.
The new draperies softened the room, emphasized the height of the ceilings and gave the space that final layer it had been missing.
That’s one of my favorite things about interior design: sometimes you don’t need to redo an entire room. One thoughtfully chosen element can completely change how the space feels.
If your primary bedroom feels unfinished and you can’t quite figure out what’s missing, take a look at your windows. Adding full-length draperies can bring softness, warmth and sophistication to a room while making the entire space feel more intentional.
After living with draperies I didn’t love for almost a decade, I’m so pleased with this change.
