2010 Christmas

Christmas is my favorite time to decorate!  Who doesn't enjoy it?
Each year the girls and I enjoy getting out all the ornaments.  We've collected blown glass, crystal and our definite favorites are the ones they have made over the years.
The tree is so sparkly at night and is in our entryway this year.  I placed it in a garden urn to make it feel grander and we are really enjoying it!
I tried to keep it minimal so it doesn't look like Christmas threw up in my house.
Love my noodle ornament that my youngest made for when she was in kindergarten.
These large crystal prisms are my newest this year.
My garland is creeping up the mantel for a new change.

All my left over Christmas greenery landed in this giant bowl on my dining room table and it turned out so simple and elegant.  Didn't have to do much to make it look great.  Added the antlers so my husband would be happy!
These birdies love their yearly wreath that I wrap around their necks.
Metallic silver ornaments placed on a rustic wooden tray speaks volumes.
Outside urns got a touch too!

My gate feels special this year because of its new candy cane bow.
Rejoice is right!  I'm rejoicing that it's this time of the year!
Love all the festive parties and more time with family and friends.
I'm participating in a Deck the Halls party!

Tobi Fairley's Design Camp & Her Home

Tobi and I in her home in front of her freshly decorated mantel.

Last month I attended Tobi Fairley's Advanced Design Camp.  As you know, Tobi is a Designer in Little Rock, AR and was voted as one of the top 20 designers in America.
See Traditional Home Magazine for full article.
Such a colorful person, inside and out!
Her work was also featured on the March 2010 cover of House Beautiful Magazine
She offers Design Camps throughout the year and I had to attend!
There were about 15-20 of us, some designers and some who just have a passion for design.  We had a great group with an amazing dynamic.  I had never been in a room filled with such creativity and it was awesome!

The first night, we had the privilege of having our first session in Tobi's beautiful home. We sat around her living room casually and her topic was focused on entertaining.  She is filled with ideas and has such a fun, magnetic personality.  She spoke and answered questions about anything and everything from flower arrangements to party story boards.
From the moment I walked into her entry, it felt like home to me. You know the feeling of a space that welcomes you in.  She was greeting each one of us at the door as we came in.  Her smile is contagious, very warm and completely genuine just like I thought it would be from reading her blog over the past year.
Each room had a glorious surprise in every corner.  The best part was that it was filled with rich colors and incredible patterns.  Tobi was born to work with pattern and vibrant color that's for sure!!
Tobi took us on a tour of her home and I was hanging on every word that came out of her mouth.  It was so much fun to see how her designer mind thinks and creates.  She is incredibly gifted and is definitely doing what God created her to do!
Aren't these chairs delightful on each side of her Christmas tree?

This room is a place where you can't help but feel peaceful.
Notice that she has a lot of items on this table.  The key to this looking so beautiful is that she used only a few colors, different heights and complimentary calm patterns that rest your eye and don't compete with each other.  The dining room setting doesn't distract from the rest of her furniture, accessories and artwork in that room.  CRISP AND CLEAN!
Yes, we got to eat those cupcakes!!

This table was set in her kitchen eating area.  Such a happy space.  I know her daughter must be in heaven!  I imagined myself eating a wonderful family breakfast at this table Christmas morning.  I'm sure that is what her family does.  Tobi is definitely a woman of traditions and family so I know every bit of her home is used for all the family time she holds dear to her.
I loved everything about this table setting but one thing that I really liked is how Tobi added the pom pom fringe to the edge of the napkins.  It is a small detail but it brings the whole table together.  Notice how your eye sees the tall black Eiffel towers and then the black napkin fringe and then you will notice in the picture the black stripes on the rug.  It all flows together magnificently.  These are the details that make GREAT DESIGN.
One more thing about this table is the fact that it can be used for other occasions (valentines day) as well.  Change out a few plates, etc. and take the Santa chair cover away and make one for cupid.   Christmas decor doesn't have to be all the traditional colors.  Tobi really mixed it up in her home and it all goes beautifully with her every day decor.  Functional, beautiful and practical are what Tobi's tips are all about - so refreshing!
The Entry
The black and white wallpaper is stunning.  I had seen pictures in magazines and on her website before but in person it is so much more beautiful.  I almost stole the entry lamp on the way out!
The wallpaper continues all the way up the stairs and a colorful painting greets you at the top.
This is her daughters playroom.  My girls LOVED seeing pictures of this room.  They are teenagers and were crazy about it so her daughter will grow into this space as she gets older.
The pink chair spoke to me!  The black piping really is the icing on the cake.
Her Christmas tree is climbing with with sock monkeys.
After a delightful time in her home with amazing food provided by her dear mom we headed back to the hotel to get a good night sleep for the next days camp.  This was a great time for me to get to know my new friends!  We sat in the lobby and lost all sense of time as we talked and compared notes!
It was fun to be in Tobi's gallery and studio on Saturday.
We learned so much and it was a delightful experience for me.   What an honor to be trained under her.  A lot of designers are closed about their ideas but Tobi is willing and open to share about how she became successful at what she does.  I can see why her clients love her because I did!
Thank you Tobi for a wonderful Design Camp!
Get ready world, I'm taking my design to the next level.

Business lobby all decked out

Here's a peek at the Christmas decorating I did today in a business lobby.
They have a wonderful color scheme.  Ice blue, silver and white.  I coordinated all the decorations with their large artwork that hangs in their reception area.
End of the stairway.
Waved artwork panels behind the reception area.

Lots of sparkle and breakables!
My favorite ornaments.  I love the weathered metallic look.
These picture don't do it justice, the 20 foot tree really is grand!
Fa la la la la la la la la
I'm in the Christmas Spirit after today!

Jeweled Christmas Tree

We went away for Thanksgiving and had a wonderful time in East Texas with our family.
We did some shopping in Jefferson and I visited all their wonderful antique shops.  I found this authentic, unique and creative work of art hanging in one of the shops and I was immediately drawn to it.
Old vintage beads, earings, broaches, pins, rings, buckles, charms, etc. all mounted on black velvet and then shaped into a beautiful Christmas tree.  Brilliant!  Can you imagine the thought, detail, patience and time that went into placing each piece.
Isn't it stunning?
Now this is what I call a treasure! Can you imagine having something like this?  Especially if all of the jewels were collected from your family over generations!
Here are a few that I found online that might inspire you to make your own!
Found on ebay
Of course, the above jewels are not vintage but you get the idea.  This would be a great project for teenage girls.

Ruthie's tips for your holiday decorating

If you are like me, the day after Thanksgiving is when all the Christmas decorating starts.
Here are a few tips for you as you unpack all your treasures.
When unpacking your Christmas wreaths, spend some time tweaking them.  Adjust the branches, make the bow look fresh and new. Add a new bow if it's crumpled.  This is one of the biggest mistakes people make and it takes 2 minutes to give it a little TLC.  Same goes for your Christmas Tree.

I found this wreath container at Target for $9.99 and it keeps things from getting all tired and worn out.
Cluster your collections together in a grouping.  If you have Santas for instance, put them all in the same place so they have more of an impact rather than all spread out.
Put away all your "cutsey" Christmas decorations.  Put those in the kids areas.  Keep your living room decluttered and don't overdecorate your living room space.
Add fur or fun fabric to your existing stockings to make them look a little different this year.
Hang ornaments from your chandeliers.
This was my chandelier last year.
Make a craft with your kids.  Here is one:
Create your own "peace sign" wreath together.  Foam wreath, hot glue gun and ornaments and you can get really creative.

Purchase at Pier One Imports if you don't want to make it!

Hang ornaments in areas where you don't expect them to be hung.  Add one to the end of your drapery rods or in your kitchen window, it adds sparkle to your room.

Country Living

Hang a piece of fresh garland from your pump soap with a ribbon.  Or you could paint this dispenser with something festive.  Doesn't it look like an ornament?  Paint a white snowflake on the front for instance.

Found at Amazon.com
Decorate the places that you see and are in the most.  Add a touch of Christmas to your Master bedroom.  Maybe it is garland around your vanity or dresser, maybe it's just a fresh wreath on your wall.

You don't have to use all red and green.  Mix it up.

Tie beautiful ribbon around your guest towels/bathroom towels.

Add fresh garland to your artificial garland, it makes things smell beautiful and it looks fuller too.

STOP and savor a cup of flavored coffee or tea or your favorite hot chocolate to make yourself enjoy the season.  Don't just drive thru, I challenge you to go inside and sit for a while.  My favorite hot drink is the eggnog latte at Starbucks.

Pine Cones are an inexpensive accessory for the Christmas season.  Spray paint them all silver or copper or ice blue and place them in a large bowl on your dining room table or in front of your fireplace.  Make garland out of your pine cones, so natural and easy.

Love how they made these pinecones into trees on the mantel, brilliant.
Buy red/gold,/silver pillowcases and place them over your dining or kitchen chairs to dress them up for the occasion.  Inexpensive and it looks like a slipcover.  Make sure you press/iron them before you place them on your chairs or it will look "cheap"
You can add beautiful ribbon with iron on tape to make them look a little  more custom.

Don't forget about your bookshelves.  Add a picture of your family together during the holidays or place an ornament on a shelf that sparkles or shines.

Use your china everyday during the month of December.  Teach your kids how to enjoy the beauty of luxury.

Purchase some inexpensive mugs that are festive and use those during December for you and your guests.

Get out all your crystal candle holders, sugar bowls, etc. that you got for your wedding gifts and make a grouping of crystal. Put a votive candle in each one and enjoy.

Press thumbtacks in your candles that spells something like
JOY or NOEL
Use wrapping paper as a runner on your table or cut the size of a place mat with fun edged scissors and place under each place setting.
Hang a wreath inside an empty flea market frame
If you buy glass candle votives this year, purchase ones that have some beautiful etchings.  When lit they look fantastic.  They don't have to be "Christmas" that way you can enjoy them all year.
A cluster of these would be amazing on a mirrored tray along with some pinecones and ornaments!
Find a fun place to hang some candycanes.
In my entry last year.
Your Christmas Tree skirt doesn't have to be a pre-made purchased skirt.  Why not use left over fabric or a couple faux fur throws.  White is beautiful too!
Hope your Thanksgiving is wonderful as you celebrate with those that you love.  Enjoy this time as you make your home festive for the Christmas Season.
